Snapshots of Joy
Dot loves music. I say that, and sometimes people look at me funny. My hard of hearing daughter? Loves music?? But it’s true. From her NICU days—when she would calm as I sang softly into her ear with her tiny hands resting on my throat—to her first Sunday at church, to her very first music class, my girl has always been mesmerized by music.
Her whole face lights up. She wants to look everywhere at once, soaking in the sound and the energy. She even shows a clear preference for classical music—much to the amusement of our family, since her dad leans classic rock and I tend to default to country.
So even before she had her hearing aids, when the chance came to join a Music Together class on base last winter, we jumped at it. We kept it going through the spring, and I found myself humming those catchy little tunes while blasting the CD at home, dancing Dot around the living room. When summer break came, we missed the class deeply—not just the music, but the structure it gave our week.
That’s why this week’s Snapshot of Joy was so special: music class started back up. Dot can now grab more of the instruments than she could in the spring, and she even seems to be tracking the beat of some of the songs. She giggled and laughed as we stood up, sat down, and spun around together.
Music is always a highlight in our week—but this week, it was an especially joyful one.
